Our Research Projects

Section 203BJ(b) of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), requires native title representative bodies and service providers such as QSNTS, to “identify persons who may hold native title in the area for which the body is the representative body”.

QSNTS is actively engaged in Section 203BJ(b) ‘people for country’ in several unclaimed areas within its region. Sometimes that research also includes areas that are under claim.

Applying a regional approach to research assists QSNTS, and potentially the Court, to clarify and understand complex regions that have multiple and sometimes competing assertions about native title rights.

Our current Section 203BJ(b) research projects are:

Central West

The Central West Research Project seeks to help us understand the area around Longreach, Barcaldine including the Thompson, Barcoo and Alice Rivers.

Darling Downs

This region covers an area from Dulacca in the west to the Great Dividing Range in the east, and from Guluguba in the north, south to Toowoomba and Pittsworth and includes the towns of Oakey, Dalby, Chinchilla and Miles.

Giliat Flinders

This research area covers an area bordered in the west by the Kalkadoon and Yulluna Peoples’ determination areas, in the east by Alick Creek, Kynuna and the Diamantina River in the south, and north to the Cloncurry and Saxby Rivers. The project area includes the towns of Cloncurry, Julia Creek and McKinlay.

St George

The research area covers an area located between and around St George, Dirranbandi, Hebel and Thallon.

South East Regional Research Project (SERRP)

This research area covers an area spanning from near Dayboro and Esk in the north, south to the New South Wales border, west to Stanthorpe, Texas and Inglewood, and incorporating places inland such as Clifton, Warwick, Boonah, Beaudesert and Ipswich.

Far North West

This research area covers the unclaimed area bounded by the Bularnu Waluwarra and Wangkayujuru People's determination area in the north, the Pitta Pitta determination in the east, the Mithaka People's claim and the Wangkanguru Yarulandi determination in the south and the Queensland / Northern Territory border in the west.
